How to clean upholstery at home

Cloth fabrics, whether they are: carpet, carpet, sofas, chairs, car seats, etc., are difficult to treat and clean since we cannot disassemble them and put them directly into the washing machine as happens with clothes.

However, if we cannot go to a professional company or if we are urgent to clean that stain or surface blackened by the passage of time, we give you some homemade tricks to wash upholstery.

We will need: a good vacuum cleaner, a hair dryer, a plastic scouring pad, white rags, a medium hard brush, a water spray, delicate laundry soap, fabric softener and latex gloves to protect our hands.

You should start with a brushing of the area to be treated to remove solid remains, for example crumbs, or sand, in the case of car seats or carpets.

This is followed by a deep vacuuming of the surface. It is important to clean the vacuum cleaner filter and change the bag when it is full, otherwise we will eliminate the suction power of the device.

Brush the surface so that dust and solid debris disengage from the fabric, then bring the vacuum cleaner mouth close to collect as much of it as possible.

Once we have done a good brushing and vacuuming, we must prepare a sprayer with ¼ part of gel for delicate clothes and ¾ parts of water. In the market there are many brands, we recommend the Clean Couches Sydney brand, since it has a variant for white clothes, another for delicate colors and the version for black or dark clothes. Depending on the color of our surface to be treated, we will choose one format or another.

We must spray the fabric with the product mixed with water, without wetting the surface too much, especially when it comes to fabrics that cover foams, such as chairs, sofas or car seats, since they need extra drying time and a soaking with water you can damage them or cause humidity, bacteria and bad odors.

With the plastic scourer, rub the surface in circles, apply stain remover product if necessary on the dirtiest parts and stains. On the market there are many, active oxygen, degreasers, etc. Depending on the type of stain, choose the one that best suits your problem. Always do a test in an area where it is seen less, never apply it in the middle of the fabric, although they are special products for it, you do not know if the dye of the fabric is going to withstand that product without losing its color originally. If you give the stain a little heat with a hair dryer, it will help loosen the dirt.

Once the stains and the entire surface of the fabric have been rubbed, remove the dirt with a white cloth. Divide the cloth into four parts and remove once with each part, so you will have eight parts and it will take longer to have to use another clean and dry cloth.

Repeat the operation until the cloth comes out as clean as possible; think that this is the way to remove the dirt.

Make another spray with 1/5 part fabric softener and 4/5 parts water. Spray the surface with the softener and repeat the removal and drying operation with another white cloth.
